Old music Thursday?

Ok, I'm going to come up with a better name for this, but I want to share some music with you peeps. It's not going to be new music, not usually, but maybe sometimes. I've been thinking a lot lately about the mixed tapes we used to make. And the desert island album lists that seem obsolete now that we have ipods. I mean why choose just five? But with all this music, how many times do you go through your music list and think "Oh, I forgot I had that!"

So sometimes I'm going to make a genius list based on one song that sounds hhm hmm good to me right now and see what comes up (thank you apple wizards for the genius button). And sometimes I'm going to make themed playlists. Just thought it'd be fun to make a weekly Nerdmom playlist to share with you guys. Let you know what I'm listening to, and maybe jog your memory, of music you love that's been buried in your music library sad and un-listened to for years.

The little patient

So here's week 1. This one's been a doozy. Jack fell and cracked his noodle open on Monday. Emergency room, 3 staples, and several sleepless nights of thinking about how fragile it all is, and how I wish I could dip him in teflon follow. The worst part of it is, every night around 4am, I woke up with some really cheerful Christmas Carol in my head, for some reason, usually sleigh ride by the Ronettes. I know I've talked about my LOVE for Christmas music. But waking up to it in a cold sweat, anxious about the mortality of your child, kind of ruins it.

Ok, so I kind of needed a pick me up, something with a little soul. I needed to listen to something that wasn't Christmas music, and that made me want to shake my booty. Here's what I've been playing too loud in my car. I defy you not to tap your toe to this list. Feel free to add your own suggestions in the comments section.

No One - Alicia Keys (shut up Nipper Knapp
Syrup and Honey - Duffy
Mr Lee - The Bobettes
For Once in my Life - Stevie Wonder (try to pretend this hasn't been ruined by American Idol)
Think - Aretha Franklin
Jungle Boogie - Kool & The Gang
Rubber Biscuit - The Blues Brothers
Soul Man - Sam & Dave
Tell The Truth - Ray Charles
Don't Make me Over - Dionne Warwick
Land of 1000 Dances - Wilson Pickett
Let The Good Times Roll - Shirley and Lee
Everybody Needs Somebody - The Blues Brothers
Cupid - Sam Cooke
Try A Little Tenderness - Otis Redding
Comin Home Baby - Mel Torme
Empire State of Mind - Jay-Z (seriously Nipper Knapp not a word out of you)

  1. Aretha and Wilson Pickett all the way, baby! I've been blaring P!nk's new greatest hits lately. I may or may not be dancing behind the wheel. You'll never know.

  2. I find Empire State of Mind to be groovy, and generally I'm more of an indie-folk-emo-rock kinda girl. My kids sing the Alicia Keys part at the top of their lungs when we play it in the car. Kinda weird as they have never been to NYC.
